RESUMO

Background: This study evaluated the influence of traumatic occlusion in the dentin-pulp complex a molar teeth submitted to subluxation. Material and methods: Ninety Wistar rats were divided into groups Naïve (N), Subluxation (S) and Subluxation with traumatic occlusion (STO) and submitted to histological analysis after 7 and 21 days. A quantitative analysis was submitted to one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test, and Chi-square and Bonferronís post-hoc test. Results: S and STO showed a significant increase in blood vessels area (p < 0.0005), amorphous fundamental substance (p < 0.0005) and reactionary dentin formation (p < 0.0005), as well as a decrease in the nuclear profile (p < 0.0005), odontoblast layer (p = 0.013 and p < 0.0005) by day 7 when compared with N. These changes normalized by day 21, except for the reactionary dentin (p < 0.0005) in both S and STO groups. Interestingly, the STO group exhibited significant changes in the increase of pulp calcification (p < 0.0005), presence of tubules with nuclei (p < 0.0005), and inflammatory infiltrate (p < 0.0005), as well reduction of nuclear profile (p < 0.0005), odontoblast layer (p < 0.0005) compared with N and S at day 21. Conclusions: STO impaired the defence response and decreased pulp regeneration capacity by increasing the inflammatory infiltrate and pulp calcification, and decreasing the nucleated cell number in the odontoblast layer and central pulp.

Objetivo: Avaliar o efeito de dois métodos de profilaxia sobre a rugosidade superficial de diferentes resinas compostas. Materiais e Métodos: Dez amostras (7 mm x 2 mm) foram confeccionadas para cada resina testada: MH - resina microhíbrida (viscosidade regular - Opallis); NH ­ resina nanohíbrida (viscosidade regular - Vittra APS); BF ­ resina bulk fill (alta viscosidade - Opus Bulk Fill); MHF ­ resina fluida microhíbrida (Opallis flow); e OS ­ resina nanohíbrida camaleão (viscosidade regular - Vittra Unique). Os valores iniciais de rugosidade (Rai) foram obtidos para cada amostra e então subdivididas em dois grupos (n = 5) seguindo o método de profilaxia: SB ­ jato de bicarbonato de sódio (125µm, 30 s, 10 mm de distância, 2 bar); e PP ­ profilaxia com pasta de pedra-pomes e escova rotatória (30 s, 3000 rpm e pressão de 150 g). Após, uma nova medida de Ra (Raf) foi obtida, e a diferença calculada (ΔRa). Os dados foram analisados pelo teste ANOVA três fatores e teste de Bonferroni, e a diferença de rugosidade (ΔRa) pelo teste Anova dois fatores e teste de Tukey (p<0,05). Resultados: MHF apresentou maior rugosidade após profilaxia com jato de bicarbonato, enquanto para NH a abrasão com pedra pomes foi mais deletéria. Para os demais grupos não houve diferença. Discussão: A alteração na rugosidade promovida pela profilaxia é material-dependente. Conclusão: A profilaxia profissional com jato de bicarbonato ou abrasão com pedra-pomes induziu alterações na rugosidade das resinas.

Results: MHF presented higher Ra values after receiving prophylaxis with SB, while for NH, the abrasion with pumice increased the Ra, and for the other groups, no differences were found. Discussion: Alteration promoted by prophylaxis is material dependent. Conclusion: Professional prophylaxis with a bicarbonate jet or abrasion with pumice-based paste can induce changes in the composites' roughness.

Objective: The aims of this study were to compare the bond strength between metallic brackets and two different glass ceramics and to evaluate the ceramic surface roughness after different finishing protocols. Methods: The surface roughness of lithium disilicate and resin matrix ceramic samples was measured (initial). All samples were treated with hydrofluoric acid and silane and bonded to metallic brackets with orthodontic cement adhesive. Shear bond strength tests were performed using a universal testing machine (n=12). The surface roughness was measured again (intermediate, n=6) after removing the remaining cement adhesive from the ceramic surfaces with a diamond or 24-blade bur after polishing the ceramic surfaces (final, n=6). Results: The resin matrix ceramic had the highest bond strength. The rotatory instrument used for the removal of cement adhesive did not affect the surface roughness of the resin matrix ceramic or lithium disilicate (p=0.985 and p=0.504, respectively), but did affect the evaluation time (p<0.001) for both restorative materials. The intermediate roughness was the highest. For the resin matrix ceramic, polishing promoted a final surface roughness similar to the initial condition; however, changes in the surface shape of this ceramic could be visibly observed when using a 24-blade bur. Conclusion: The bond strength of metallic brackets bonded on resin-matrix ceramics is higher than bonding on lithium disilicate. The use of diamond burs for the removal of the remaining adhesive from the resin matrix ceramics is highly recommended.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Investigations on the effectiveness of new methods for optimizing the fabrication of oral devices are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate stress distribution with photoelastic analysis in the periradicular area of teeth supporting occlusal devices fabricated by 5 different processes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The occlusal devices were fabricated by vacuum thermoforming, heat-polymerized acrylic resin, chemical polymerized acrylic resin, 3-dimensional printing, and milling (computer-aided manufacturing). The devices were evaluated regarding initial fit, number of adjustments for passive fit, and stress distribution under 100-N and 400-N loads in the periradicular locations of posterior teeth. RESULTS: The 3-dimensional printing device did not require any adjustment for initial adaptation to the photoelastic model and presented a little friction with the model. The heat-polymerized acrylic resin device did not seat initially, requiring more sites of adjustment until passive adaptation. At 100-N and 400-N loads, the use of the computer-aided manufacturing occlusal device resulted in the lowest stresses in periradicular areas (0.744 and 1.583, respectively), and the 3-dimensional printing occlusal device produced the highest stresses with a 400-N load application (2.427). The lowest mean of fringe pattern was observed for the computer-aided manufacturing device, and the highest mean of fringe pattern was observed for the vacuum thermoforming device. CONCLUSIONS: The computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing milled occlusal device presented the best initial adaptation and transferred lower stresses to the periradicular areas than the other evaluated devices.

Objective: To evaluate the biaxial flexural strength (BFS) of lithium disilicate (L), cemented on different substrates (epoxy resin - E and metal - M) with dual-cure resin cement (Rc) and zinc phosphate cement (Zc), not aged, thermally aged (TC) or thermo-mechanical aged (TC/MC). Material and Methods: Disks of L, E, and M were fabricated, and the cementation was performed according to the following groups: ERc (L+E+Rc); MRc (L+M+Rc); MZc (L+M+Zc); EZc (L+E+Zc). Ten samples from each described group were tested in BFS, ten more samples were subjected to TC (1×104 cycles between 5 ºC and 55 ºC water), and the last 10 samples were subjected to TC/MC (MC: 1.2×106 cycles, 50 N, 3.8 Hz). The BFS test was performed and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to evaluate the failure mode. The effect of the cementation strategy (cement/substrate) was compared in each aging method and the effect of the aging method was evaluated for each cementation strategy by one-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test (α=0.05). Results: The strength values were highest to M (237.8 ~ 463.9 MPa), in comparison to the E (41.03 ~ 66.76 MPa), despite aging and luting agent. Flexural strength data decreased after TC and TC/MC in groups cemented with Zc, but was stable when cemented with Rc. SEM analysis indicated that failure origins were located at the tensile surface of the L. Conclusion: Lithium disilicate discs cemented to the metallic substrate presented the highest biaxial flexural strength. The cementation with dual-cure resin cement did not decrease BFS after aging (AU)


Objetivo: Avaliar a resistência à flexão biaxial (BFS) do dissilicato de lítio (L), cimentado sobre diferentes substratos (resina epóxi - E e metal - M) com cimento resinoso dual (Rc) e cimento de fosfato de zinco (Zc), não envelhecido, submetido ao envelhecido térmico (TC) ou ao envelhecido térmico-mecânico (TC/MC). Material e Métodos: Foram confeccionados discos de L, E e M, e a cimentação foi realizada de acordo com os seguintes grupos: ERc (L+E+Rc); MRc (L+M+Rc); MZc (L+M+Zc); EZc (L+E+Zc). Dez amostras de cada grupo descrito foram testadas em BFS, mais dez amostras foram submetidas à TC (1×104 ciclos de imersão em água entre 5 ºC e 55 ºC), e as últimas 10 amostras foram submetidas à TC/MC (MC: 1.2 ×106 ciclos, 50 N, 3.8 Hz). Foram realizados os testes de BFS e a microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) para avaliar o modo de falha. O efeito da estratégia de cimentação (cimento/substrato) foi comparado em cada método de envelhecimento e o efeito do método de envelhecimento foi avaliado para cada estratégia de cimentação por ANOVA a um fator e teste post-hoc de Tukey (α=0,05). Resultados: Os valores de resistência foram maiores para M (237.8 ~ 463.9 MPa), em comparação com E (41.03 ~ 66.76 MPa), independentemente do envelhecimento e do agente cimentante utilizado. Os dados de resistência à flexão diminuíram após TC e TC/MC nos grupos cimentados com Zc, mas se mantiveram estáveis quando cimentados com Rc. A análise MEV indicou que a origem das falhas estava localizada na superfície de tração do L. Conclusão: Os discos de dissilicato de lítio cimentados ao substrato metálico apresentaram maior resistência à flexão biaxial. A cimentação com cimento resinoso dual não diminuiu o BFS após o envelhecimento (AU)

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the dimensional change of edentulous models made of high density laboratory silicones at different storagetimes. Methods: A metallic master model simulating an edentulous maxilla was used. The model had projections of 1.8 cm located in the regions of canines (A and B) and molars (C and D) allowing the linear measurement of distances AB, BC, CD, DA, AC and BD. A laboratory silicone mold was made for duplication of master model in the following materials (n = 10): G1: Zetalabor 85, G2: Titanium 95, G3: Platinum 95 and G4: Gypsum type III (control). The samples were photographed and measured using a software (Image J) at times T1 (baseline) and T2 (after one week of models fabrication). The data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal- Wallis and Dun non-parametric tests (α = 0.05). Results: The storage time influenced the behavior of the materials evaluated. All groups presented dimensional changes in both times and the group Tit95 presented the best results. Only Zet85 group showed a different behavior related to the region of the model. Conclusions: The high density laboratory silicones showed satisfactory results when compared to the gypsum group. Tit95 was the most stable material and it can be recommended as an edentulous model for total protheses.


RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a alteração dimensional de modelos edêntulos fabricados em silicone laboratorial de alta densidade em diferentes tempos de armazenagem. Métodos: Um modelo mestre metálico simulando uma maxila edêntula foi utilizado. O modelo possuía projeções oclusais de 1,8 cm localizadas nas regiões de caninos (A e B) e molares (C e D), permitindo a mensuração das distâncias lineares AB, BC, CD, DA, AC e BD. Um molde foi fabricado em silicone laboratorial para duplicação do modelo mestre com os seguintes materiais (n = 10): G1: Zetalabor 85, G2: Titanium 95, G3: Platinum 95 e G4: Gesso tipo III (controle). As amostras foram fotografadas e mensuradas com auxílio de um software (Image J) nos tempos T1 (baseline) e T2 (após uma semana de confecção). Os dados obtidos foram avaliados estatisticamente utilizando os testes não paramétricos de Kruskal- Wallis e Dunn (α = 0.05). Resultados: O tempo de armazenagem influenciou o comportamento dos materiais avaliados. Todos os grupos apresentaram alterações dimensionais em ambos os temos de avaliação e o G2 apresentou os melhores resultados. Apenas o grupo G1 mostrou alteração dimensional dependente da região mensurada. Conclusão: Silicones laboratoriais de alta densidade mostraram resultados satisfatórias de alteração dimensional quando comparados ao gesso tipo III. O material Titanium 95foi o mais estável e pode ser recomendado como alternativa para a confecção de modelos edêntulos.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study assessed whether the use of a silane coupling agent influence the bond strength of two universal adhesives to ceramic or resin CAD/CAM blocks. Methods: Forty-eight samples were obtained from each resin nano-ceramic hybrid block (RCBs) and lithium disilicate ceramic blocks (LD). Samples were treated with silane with MDP (Monobond - S-MDP), silane without MDP (Prosil - PS), and no silane application (Control - Ctr) followed by universal adhesive with silane (UAS) and without silane (UA) (n=8). Three polyurethane tubes (1.5 mm of internal diameter) were positioned in each sample treated surface and filled with a dual cured resin cement. Bond strength was assessed by microshear bond strength test and failure analysis was performed for all samples. Results: For the RCBs, UAS presented the highest bond strength values (p=0.004). Silane application was not significant in bond strength values (p=0.444). For LD, silane application was significant in bond strength values (p<0.001), but the adhesive was not (p=0.066). Failure analysis showed high prevalence of adhesive failures for both substrates. Conclusion: A silane-containing universal adhesive promoted the best bond strength results to the resin nano-ceramic hybrid block. For bonding to a glass-ceramic CAD/CAM material, additional silane (without MDP) application presented the best results.


RESUMO Objetivo: Este estudo avaliou se o uso de um agente de união silano influencia na resistência de união de dois adesivos universais a blocos CAD/CAM cerâmicos ou resinosos. Métodos: Quarenta e oito amostras foram obtidas de blocos resinosos (RCBs) e cerâmicos de dissilicato de lítio (LD). As amostras foram tratadas com silano contendo: MDP (Monobond - S-MDP), silano sem MDP (Prosil - PS) ou sem aplicação de silano (Control - Ctr) seguido de adesivo universal com silano (UAS) ou sem silano (UA) (n=8). Três tubos de poliuretano (1,5 mm de diâmetro interno) foram posicionados em cada superfície tratada da amostra e preenchidos com um cimento resinoso dual. A resistência de união foi avaliada pelo teste de microcisalhamento e a análise de falha foi realizada para todas as amostras. Resultados: Para os RCBs, UAS apresentou os maiores valores de resistência de união (p=0,004). A aplicação de silano não foi significativa nos valores de resistência adesiva (p=0,444). Para LD, a aplicação de silano foi significativa nos valores de resistência de união (p<0,001), mas o adesivo não (p=0,066). A análise de falhas mostrou alta prevalência de falhas adesivas para ambos os substratos. Conclusão: O adesivo universal contendo silano promoveu os melhores valores de resistência adesiva ao bloco de resina. Para o bloco cerâmico, a aplicação adicional de silano (sem MDP) apresentou melhores resultados.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to estimate the percentage distribution of body composition parameters for healthy people at different ages from the assessment of electrical bioimpedance. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of healthy Brazilian aged 5 years and older. Were evaluated: total body fat; percent body fat; fat-free mass; percent lean mass; fat mass index; and fat-free mass index. RESULTS: Of 1240 participants, with a median age of 27.0 years, 52.5% were female, and 73.7% were Caucasian. Most of the body composition variables were associated with age. The fat-free mass increased from youth to adult and decreased in the elderly in both sexes, with higher values in males than in females. In males, the percentage of lean mass has higher values in adolescence compared to childhood, and in adults compared to the elderly, when analyzed from the 50th percentile. In women, fat-free mass compared to adulthood, values were higher in childhood and lower in older ages. CONCLUSIONS: The study is the first to describe the Brazilian reference values for most clinical parameters of bioimpedance in percentiles stratified by different life cycles and sex. These findings can be very useful in clinical practice for health promotion and monitoring the nutritional status of the individual.

PURPOSE: To simulate biodegradation and wear of stained and glazed CAD lithium disilicate ceramic, and evaluate their effects on the microbial adherence and mechanical and surface properties of lithium disilicate ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 160 lithium disilicate ceramic discs were fabricated and divided in eight groups according to manual stain and glaze application with a fine paint brush (without stain and glaze; with stain and glaze) and aging procedures (no aging; wear at 30 N load, 1.7 Hz, 3 × 105 cycles; biodegradation by exposure to microcosm biofilm; biodegradation + wear; biodegradation + wear). Profilometry was performed to determine the surface roughness and the wear consequences. Biaxial flexural strength test was performed, and a Streptococcus mutans adherence test was conducted to evaluate the number of colony forming units. RESULTS: Unaged samples with and without stain and glaze presented the lowest values of surface roughness (p < 0.001), but after aging (wear, biodegradation, or both), the samples in the stain and glaze groups were rougher than those in the no stain and glaze groups (p < 0.001). The stain and glaze groups showed the highest volume of wear after aging (p = 0.04), and had the lowest flexural strength values (p < 0.01), irrespective of the aging method. The aging method did not affect the flexural strength (p = 0.06). The number of colonies forming units was higher for biodegradation + no stain and glaze, biodegradation + wear + no stain and glaze, no aging + stain and glaze, biodegradation + stain and glaze, and biodegradation + wear + stain and glaze. The lowest values were observed for no aging + no stain and glaze. CONCLUSION: The staining and glazing of lithium disilicate increased the surface wear and bacterial adherence, and decreased biaxial flexural strength of the material. When exposed to S. mutans, surface roughness increased, and biodegradation favored bacterial adherence.

BACKGROUND: Tooth avulsion is a common cause of tooth loss. However, there is a significant lack of knowledge about dental trauma and the appropriate emergency procedures to handle these cases. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the educational effect of notebook covers illustrated with figures and informative texts about tooth avulsion and replantation in sixth-grade primary school pupils. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixth-grade pupils of two public school participated in this study. An experimental group consisting of 134 pupils received notebook covers illustrated with figures and informative texts about tooth avulsion and replantation, while a control group of 108 pupils received notebooks with neutral covers. An assessment of the educational effects on pupils was performed after 9 months, with a standardized questionnaire normally used to evaluate dental trauma. Statistical analysis was conducted with SPSS 21.0 (α = .05) for group description and comparison using chi-square and Student t tests. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the experimental group showed statistically significant improvements in correct meaning of dental trauma (38% vs. 58.2%); procedures to follow in the case of dental avulsion (2.8% vs. 70.9%); storing the avulsed tooth in milk (18.5% vs. 76.9%); general knowledge about dental anatomy (61.1% vs. 95.5%); and the ideal time for the tooth to remain outside the mouth prior to replantation (20.4% vs. 59.7%). CONCLUSION: The use of notebook covers illustrated with figures and informative texts about dental trauma led to a significant increase in the knowledge of schoolchildren about tooth avulsion, first aid, and replantation.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of airborne-particle abrasion with alumina particles or silicamodified alumina particles on the bond strength between zirconia and conventional MDP-based (Ph; Panavia F 2.0, Kuraray) or self-adhesive (SA; RelyX U200, 3M ESPE) resin cements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five surface treatments were evaluated: C = no surface treatment; AB = airborne-particle abrasion with alumina particles (BIO-ART Dental Supplies and Equipment); ABP = AB combined with MDP-based primer (Alloy Primer, Kuraray); SS = airborne-particle abrasion with silica-modified alumina particles (CoJet, 3M ESPE) combined with silane (RelyX Ceramic Primer, 3M ESPE); and SSP = SS combined with MDP-based primer. The surface roughness (Ra) of the airborne particle-abraded samples (n = 5) was measured by a contact profilometer (Mitutoyo Surftest SJ-401, Mitutoyo). Cylinders of the resin cements tested were bonded to the surface-treated zirconia. The microshear test was performed by the application of a load with a wire loop parallel to the adhesive interface until debonding of the resin cement cylinders. The microshear bond strength (µSBS) of the samples was measured before and after being subjected to thermocycling (TC; 5°C to 55°C, 60 seconds dwell time for 3,000 cycles; MSCT, Marcelo Nucci). One-way (Ra) and two-way (µSBS) analysis of variance followed by Tukey post hoc test (α = .05) were used. RESULTS: The SS (Ph: 12.6 MPa; Ph-TC: 6.37 MPa; SA: 11.8 MPa; SA-TC: 9.37) and SSP (Ph: 10.4 MPa; Ph-TC: 5.82 MPa; SA: 10.4 MPa; SA-TC: 10.0) surface treatments produced the highest surface roughness values (P < .001). The SS samples achieved the highest immediate bond strength for both resin cements. However, after TC, SA resin cement associated with any surface treatment produced the highest bond strength values. CONCLUSION: The self-adhesive resin cement promoted higher and more stable bond strength values when associated with a surface roughening method.

Abstract Objectives: The aim of this study was to estimate the percentage distribution of body composition parameters for healthy people at different ages from the assessment of electrical bioimpedance. Methods: A cross-sectional study of healthy Brazilian aged 5 years and older. Were evaluated: total body fat; percent body fat; fat-free mass; percent lean mass; fat mass index; and fat-free mass index. Results: Of 1240 participants, with a median age of 27.0 years, 52.5% were female, and 73.7% were Caucasian. Most of the body composition variables were associated with age. The fat-free mass increased from youth to adult and decreased in the elderly in both sexes, with higher values in males than in females. In males, the percentage of lean mass has higher values in adolescence compared to childhood, and in adults compared to the elderly, when analyzed from the 50th percentile. In women, fat-free mass compared to adulthood, values were higher in childhood and lower in older ages. Conclusions: The study is the first to describe the Brazilian reference values for most clinical parameters of bioimpedance in percentiles stratified by different life cycles and sex. These findings can be very useful in clinical practice for health promotion and monitoring the nutritional status of the individual.

ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the association between children and adolescents' body composition with family income. Methods Cross-sectional study, participants between 5 and 19 years were included. A standardized questionnaire assessed socioeconomic variables. The outcome variables were z-score of Body Mass Index and bioimpedance parameters (skeletal muscle mass, fat-free mass, and fat percentage) and predictor variables (age, sex, race, place of residence, father's education, birth weight and breastfeeding) were analyzed using the quantile regression model and data from the 50th percentile are presented. The tests were bidirectional and the differences were considered significant with p<0.05. Results Among the 529 participants included, 284 (53.6%) were female and the mean age was 11.41±3.9 years. The Body Mass Index z-score was the only outcome that did not show differences between sexes (p=0.158). In the crude model, lower family income was associated with lower skeletal muscle mass (Difference=-7.70; 95% CI -9.32 to -5.89), p<0.001), lower fat-free mass (Difference= -13.40; 95% CI -16.40 to -10.39, p<0.001) and the lowest percentage of fat was associated with lower family income (Difference= -5.01, 95% CI -9.91 to -0.11, p=0.027). The z-score of BMI was not associated with family income. Conclusion Family income is directly associated with lower fat-free mass, fat percentage, and skeletal muscle mass in children and adolescents.


RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar a associação entre a composição corporal de crianças e adolescentes com a renda familiar. Métodos Estudo transversal, foram incluídos participantes entre 5 e 19 anos. As variáveis socioeconômicas foram avaliadas por meio de questionário padronizado. As variáveis de desfecho foram escore Z do índice de massa corporal e parâmetros de bioimpedância (massa muscular esquelética, massa livre de gordura e percentual de gordura) e variáveis preditoras (idade, sexo, raça, local de residência, escolaridade do pai, peso ao nascer e aleitamento materno) foram analisados pelo modelo de regressão quantílica e são apresentados os dados do percentil 50. Os testes foram bidirecionais, e as diferenças foram consideradas significativas com p<0,05. Resultados Entre os 529 participantes incluídos, 284 (53,6%) eram do sexo feminino e a média de idade foi de 11,41±3,9 anos. O escore Z do índice de massa corporal foi o único desfecho que não apresentou diferenças entre os sexos (p=0,158). No modelo bruto, uma menor renda familiar foi associada a menor massa muscular esquelética (Diferença= -7,70; IC 95% -9,32 a -5,89), p<0,001), menor massa livre de gordura (Diferença= -13,40; IC 95% -16,40 a -10,39, p<0,001) e o menor percentual de gordura associou-se à menor renda familiar (Diferença= -5,01, IC 95% -9,91 a -0,11, p=0,027). O escore Z do IMC não foi associado à renda familiar. Conclusão A renda familiar está diretamente associada à menor massa magra, ao percentual de gordura e à massa muscular esquelética em crianças e adolescentes.

This study tested whether three different cement layer thicknesses (60, 120 and 180 µm) would provide the same bonding capacity between adhesively luted lithium disilicate and human dentin. Ceramic blocks were cut to 20 blocks with a low-speed diamond saw under cooling water and were then cemented to human flat dentin with an adhesive protocol. The assembly was sectioned into 1 mm2 cross-section beams composed of ceramic/cement/dentin. Cement layer thickness was measured, and three groups were formed. Half of the samples were immediately tested to evaluate the short-term bond strength and the other half were submitted to an aging simulation. The microtensile test was performed in a universal testing machine, and the bond strength (MPa) was calculated. The fractured specimens were examined under stereomicroscopy. Applying the finite element method, the residual stress of polymerization shrinkage according to cement layer thickness was also calculated using first principal stress as analysis criteria. Kruskal-Wallis tests showed that the ''cement layer thickness'' factor significantly influenced the bond strength results for the aged samples (p = 0.028); however, no statistically significant difference was found between the immediately tested groups (p = 0.569). The higher the cement layer thickness, the higher the residual stress generated at the adhesive interface due to cement polymerization shrinkage. In conclusion, the cement layer thickness does not affect the immediate bond strength in lithium disilicate restorations; however, thinner cement layers are most stable in the short term, showing constant bond strength and lower residual stress.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to compare the trueness and precision of physical models manufactured chairside (intraoral scanner and 3D printed) or by plaster models obtained using impression with alginate or addition silicone. A full- arch stainless steel die was impressed to obtain ten physical models for each group. The models were measured in a stereomicroscope, considering four linear distances. To assess the precision accuracy, an analysis of the measurement variability was carried out, identified by the coefficients of variation and by the Levene's test to compare the groups. To analyze trueness, the data average was subtracted from the database and compared considering alpha as 5 %. Considering precision, the higher dispersion of data occurred in the models obtained with silicone impression. And for trueness, Kruskal Wallis and Dunn tests results did not indicate differences between the groups in the anteroposterior linear distances (p> 0.05). Only in anterior transverse distance obtained through TRIOS (0.31 mm), it presented lower accuracy compared to the models from silicone impression (0.13 mm); however, at transverse posterior distance, the models from silicone impression showed the lowest accuracy (p 0.05). The physical dental models obtained by digital and analog workflows showed acceptable dimensional accuracy expressed by high precision and trueness. There is no difference between the evaluated intraoral scanner systems and the impression materials for the full-arch impression.


RESUMEN: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo comparar la veracidad y precisión de modelos físicos fabricados en la clínica dental (escáner intraoral e impreso en 3D) o por modelos de yeso obtenidos mediante impresión con alginato o silicona de adición. Una matriz de acero inoxidable de arco completo fue impresa para obtener diez modelos físicos para cada grupo. Los modelos se midieron en un estereomicroscopio, considerando cuatro distancias lineales. Se realizó un análisis de la variabilidad de la medida para evaluar la precisión, identificada por los coeficientes de variación y por la prueba de Levene para comparar los grupos. Para analizar la veracidad, el promedio de los datos se restó de la base de datos y se comparó considerando alfa como 5 %. Considerando la precisión, la mayor dispersión de datos ocurrió en los modelos obtenidos con impresión de silicona. Y para la veracidad, los resultados de las pruebas de Kruskal Wallis y Dunn no indicaron diferencias entre los grupos en las distancias lineales anteroposteriores (p> 0,05). Solo en la distancia transversal anterior obtenida mediante TRIOS (0,31 mm) presentó menor precisión en comparación con los modelos de impresión de silicona (0,13 mm); sin embargo, la distancia transversal posterior, los modelos de impresión de silicona mostraron la menor precisión (p 0,05). Los modelos dentales físicos obtenidos mediante flujos de trabajo digitales y analógicos mostraron una precisión dimensional aceptable expresada por alta precisión y veracidad. No se observó diferencia entre los sistemas de escáner intraoral evaluados y los materiales de impresión para la impresión de arco completa.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of pulp chamber extension angles and filling material mechanical properties on the biomechanical response of a ceramic endocrown. A 3D model of maxillary molar that underwent endodontically treatment was exported to computer aided design software to conduct finite element analysis (FEA). The endocrown model was modified considering different pulp chamber extension angles (right angle; 6°, 12° and 18° of axial divergence). The solids were imported into the computer aided engineering software in Standard for the Exchange of Product Data (STEP) format. Nine different filling materials were simulated to seal the orifice of the root canal system under each endocrown restoration (resin composite, bulk-fill resin composite, alkasite, flowable resin composite, glass ionomer cement, autocured resin-reinforced glass ionomer cement, resin cement, bulk-fill flowable resin composite, zinc oxide cement), totaling 36 models. An axial load (300 N) was applied at the occlusal surface. Results were determined by colorimetric graphs of von-Misses stress (VMS) and Maximum Principal Stress (MPS) on tooth, cement layer, and endocrown restorations. VMS distribution showed a similar pattern between the models, with more stress at the load region for the right-angled endocrowns. The MPS showed that the endocrown intaglio surface and cement layer showed different mechanical responses with different filing materials and pulp chamber angles. The stress peaks plotted in the dispersion plot showed that the filling material stiffness is proportional to the stress magnitude in the endocrown, cement layer and tooth adhesive surface. In addition, the higher the pulp chamber preparation angle, the higher the stress peak in the restoration and tooth, and the lower the stress in the cement layer. Therefore, 6° and 12° pulp chamber angles showed more promising balance between the stresses of the adhesive interface structures. Under the conditions of this study, rigid filling materials were avoided to seal the orifice of root canal system when an endocrown restoration was planned as rehabilitation. In addition, the pulp chamber axial walls were prepared between 6° and 12° of divergence to balance the stress magnitude in the adhesive interface for this treatment modality.

The endodontic revascularization may be an alternative treatment for necrotic immature teeth, however, several treatment steps may cause tooth discoloration. This study evaluated the use of three calcium silicate-based cements with different radiopacifying agents on the color alteration (∆E) of extracted premolars after simulation of revascularization. Forty single rooted extracted premolars were shaped with #1-6 gates Glidden drills, rinsed with sodium hypochlorite, and filled with fresh human blood. Three calcium silicate-based cements with different radiopacifying agents (bismuth oxide - CSBi, calcium tungstate - CSW, and zirconium oxide - CSZr) were applied over the blood clot (n=10). The control group received the application of a temporary zinc oxide-based cement (TFZn) (n=10). ∆E was measured with a spectrophotometer, using the L*a*b* color system of the International Commission on Illumination (CIELab), in different times: prior to the preparation of the access cavity (t0); right after treatment (t1); and after one (t2), two (t3), three (t4) and four (t5) months. The tooth site for color evaluation was standardized by silicon matrix, the color reading was performed 3 times per tooth, and the teeth were stored in 37º water between evaluations. ∆E, whiteness (WID index) and yellowness (b*) were evaluated. Data were subjected to one-way ANOVA and repeated measures ANOVA, followed by Tukey's post hoc test (α=0.05). All groups were similar in ∆E1 (t0-t1). The ∆E was the lowest and constant in the control group. In all evaluation times, CSBi presented the highest ∆E (p<0.01). CSW and CSZr were similar in all evaluated times and presented intermediate ∆E values. WID index from CSBi and CSW presented more distancing from 'white' reference. CSBi presented the greatest decrease in yellowness (b* value). The cement containing bismuth oxide presented the highest color alteration values. All tested calcium silicate-based cements presented clinically perceptible discoloration. Calcium tungstate and zirconium oxide may be used as alternative radiopacifiers to decrease tooth discoloration after endodontic tooth revascularization.

This study evaluated the failure load and the shear bond strength of 4 block materials indicated for computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) of dental veneers: lithium disilicate, feldspathic ceramic, polymer-infiltrated ceramic, and nanohybrid composite. The tested hypothesis was that the material that combined an elastic modulus similar to that of enamel with the highest bond strength values would present the highest failure load. From prefabricated CAD/CAM blocks, disc-shaped specimens (6.0 × 0.7 mm; n = 10) and cylinders (2.4 × 2.5 mm; n = 10) were fabricated for load-to-failure and shear bond strength tests, respectively. Materials were adhesively bonded to flattened bovine enamel surfaces, stored in distilled water at 37°C for 90 days, and subjected to thermocycling (2000 cycles of 5°C to 55°C). Discs of restorative material were bonded to enamel and subjected to an increasing load that was applied perpendicular to the bonding interface until catastrophic failure occurred. A chisel was used to apply an increasing load parallel to the adhesive interface between the enamel and a cylinder of restorative material to measure shear bond strength. Data were subjected to a Weibull analysis and 1-way analysis of variance followed by a Tukey post hoc test (α = 0.05). The type of restorative material significantly affected the (mean [SD]) failure load when bonded to enamel (P = 0.006): polymer-infiltrated ceramic (1167.9 [310.2] N) = feldspathic ceramic (1115.0 [382.0] N) = nanohybrid composite (1067.3 [251.0] N) > lithium disilicate (786.2 [304.5] N). The type of restorative material also significantly affected the (mean [SD]) bond strength to enamel (P < 0.001): lithium disilicate (32.81 [11.19] MPa) = polymer-infiltrated ceramic (27.04 [7.65] MPa) > feldspathic ceramic (21.11 [9.16] MPa) > nanohybrid composite (9.08 [3.66] MPa). The polymer-infiltrated ceramic presented the best performance when bonded to enamel.

Abstract Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the agreement between the most used skinfold thickness equations with multi-frequency bioimpedance analysis in the prediction of body fat levels in children. Method: A cross-sectional study of healthy Brazilian community-dwelling individuals. The anthropometric assessment included height, body mass, arm circumference, and waist circumference. The percentage of body fat was obtained by measuring skinfold thickness equations and using bioimpedance analysis, and skinfold thickness was measured using a scientific skinfold caliper. Bland-Altman plot analysis was used to verify the agreement between the methods. Results: There were 439 children and adolescents evaluated, with a mean age of 11.6 ± 3.7 years. The mean body fat by bioimpedance analysis was 22.8% ± 10.4%, compared to 22.4% ± 8.8% by Slaughter (1), 20.4% ± 9.2% by Slaughter (2), 19.6% ± 4.4% by Goran, and 24.7% ± 10.0% by Huang equations. Bland-Altman plot analysis revealed limits of agreement greater than 8% between the bioimpedance analysis approach and equations, exceeding the clinically acceptable limit predefined a priori. None of the equations had good agreement with bioimpedance analysis. Conclusion: It was concluded that skinfold thickness and bioimpedance analysis should not be used interchangeably in children and adolescents.
